Collage, 2017

A collage of alphabets found at Singapore Science Centre. The alphabets are arranged into a sentence, which is a quote by René Descartes.

Most of the typography at the Singapore Science Centre were simple or sans serif, lacking in excitement or uniqueness. There were interesting typography to be found though, especially in the exhibition headers and infographic posters. As I walked around the centre, I thought about how clean and cool the place is and factored that into my design layout for my finalised version.

For my final version, I chose it for its neatness and centralised arrangement. I wanted to evoke a sense of control, since the Science Centre is a very clean and sleek place. For the last line, there is a large empty space beside it for the viewer to fill it up with their own word or words - as befitting the philosophy that 'to think is to exist'.

Digital Manipulation, 2017

Mirrored and directly-lit translucent sheets arranged into alphabets to form a sentence.

Light is as a material is fascinating, so for this project I chose to work with light. I tried shining light
through various transparent materials like plastic wrappers, bubble wrap, and then coloured
transparencies. As it was hard to form words with the light shone through plastic wrappers and the bubble wrap, I decided to experiment more with coloured transparencies.

I aimed to create a piece that reflects its original source material (light), so I chose this with its centralised arrangement. The words are also arranged in a circular shape, to be reminiscent of a torch's light.
